Photovoltaic Systems – The Structure and Method Behind Solar Electrical Systems. Learn about the different types of Photovoltaic systems for your home or business

Photovoltaic Systems:

Solar power is one of the fastest growing sources of alternative energy today. Research in development in the solar energy field continues to lower the costs of installing the PV solar system in your home or business. To meet your expectations of solar energy, the choices you make as you choose your system are crucial. Different types of PV systems meet different levels of need. Make sure you understand the system electrical production and interaction of the solar electrical system you choose.

Stand Alone Photovoltaic systems just as the name implies have the design to operate independent of electric utility grids. In most cases, the design supplies specific DC and/or AC electrical loads. A direct-coupled system is the simplest type of stand-alone PV system. In this system, the DC output of the PV module the connection is direct to the DC load. There is no energy storage so it only works during the hours of sunlight.

Many stand-alone PV systems use batteries for energy storage. A charge controller controls the flow of electricity to the batter. Once the battery system is fully loaded with charge the DC flow stops. The battery storage system allows current to be stored for unfavorable weather conditions and nighttime use. An inverter between the batter storage and the AC load will convert the DC to AC allowing electricity use for appliances and other AC operated devices.

Some photovoltaics systems are grid-tie systems. A grid-tie system allows for inter-connection to your local utility network. Wired with a synchronizing inverter, grid-tie systems feed surplus electricity back to the local utility. Your local utility acting as an infinite storage system eliminates the need for batteries with a grid-tie system.

Even though the initial cost of solar electric systems can be significant, several things make the investment attractive. First, there is the renewable nature of the system. Once the initial investment is recouped, your energy is coming from the sun without cost. Low system maintenance and many tax incentives make solar panel systems an attractive alternative for powering homes and businesses.
