THIN FILM SOLAR PANELS

Learn about this lightweight, quick, and easy solar technology.

Thin Film Solar Panels:

More and more people are turning to solar power as a clean, responsible, and cost effective energy solution. Increasing demands for alternative energy sources have spurred solar technology development. One of the newest additions to the solar power array is thin-film photovoltaic (PV) laminate.

Thin-film photovoltaic (PV) laminate eliminates the heavy glass and racks of previous solar power systems. Installing a roof system on a standing-seam metal roof is now quick and easy. Peel and stick the thin-film laminate right onto the panels. Once the laminate is applies install the new roof panels and connect the output from the PV panel to an inverter. The inverter changes the direct current to alternating current used on our homes. That’s just how easy it is to get solar power for your home using thin-film solar panels.

Thin-films are so named because their manufacturing process involves applying multiple layers of sun-transforming substances onto a thin base material. Silicon has long been the preferred semiconductor used in creating solar cells.

There are three types of thin-film solar cells. There is the Amorphous Silicon, Cadminium Telluride, and copper Indium Gallium DiSelenide (CIGS). Amorphous and CIGS have less demanding manufacturing processes, and use very thin layers of material. These very thin layers can be deposited on cheaper substrates like plastic, glass, or metal. This allows their overall cost to be less than that of the more traditional solar power products.

PV systems using the thin-film technology can be less expensive to create. They can also be easily portable, and easier to construct than the solar power system that does not use thin-film.

Thin-film solar products are positioned to branch into many areas. Building materials, clothing materials, and electronics are three main areas that can currently have major benefits from using thin-film technology to produce solar powered products. Look for this industry to take a major leap.

Even though there have been tremendous advances in solar power technology there is still much research and development underway. Look forward to even more advances in the world of solar power in the near future.
